Prince of wales resurfacing scheme

With continuing deterioration and repairs of the existing surfacing, a task order was issued in 2023 for a detail design of the resurfacing of the Prince of Wales (M4) Cable Stay section of the bridge by National Highways.

The objective of the scheme was to re-waterproof and resurface a 1km stretch of the cable stay bridge to extend the life of the road surface.

This was the first major resurfacing and re-waterproofing since the M4 bridge opened in 1996 and essential for the long-term operation of the bridge. The opportunity was taken to carry out other maintenance work.

Work has included:

  • Removing the existing surfacing and waterproofing layer
  • Inspecting the concrete bridge deck
  • Carrying out repairs to the bridge deck
  • Applying waterproofing system
  • Resurfacing
  • Replacing bridge joints
  • Replacing drainage covers
  • Undertaking central barrier works
  • Maintenance to the facilities in the towers

We were tasked with providing the traffic management on behalf of our client Amey.

We aimed to maximise the avaliable capacity by:

  • Keeping 2 lanes running in both directions
  • Offering the M48 Severn bridge as an alternative route

We used a mixture of overnight and lane closures. A temporary contraflow and reduced speed limit on the bridge will keep two lanes open in each direction.

Benefits

  • Extended life of road surface
  • Reduced
  • smoother and safer journeys on a vital route
  • future proof the surfacing of the bridge and ensure it is fit for purpose for the next 20 years, reducing the need for further unplanned closures, which cause the most disruption to users.
